With the country having been pounded by wind and rain and in some places snow in recent days, the adverse conditions have claimed their first bike race casualty for the weekend ahead in the shape of the Wallace Caldwell Memorial.
The event was due to be held tomorrow, Saturday; with promoters Ballymena Road Club saying they had no option but to abandon their plans because of the impact of snowfall along the race route. The racing was to start in Ballymena, Co Antrim. The club issued a statement, which reads:
Wallace Caldwell Postponed
Due to the severe weather conditions, Ballymena Road Club in consultation with the PSNI has decided to postpone the Wallace Caldwell due to take place tomorrow (Saturday 23rd March).
Currently Springwell is covered with snow and although cleared a short time ago the road service are having great difficulty keeping this and other roads on the route open.
Ballymena are currently working with Cycling Ulster to find an alternative date for this great race.
For those of you who have pre-entered and paid, keep checking back to www.ballymenaroadclub.co.uk to obtain information regarding refunds etc.
Ballymena apologise for any inconvenience caused.
