Smyth had far from ideal preparations but pulled his best performance ever out of the bag
Dubliner Enda Smyth has taken almost two seconds off his personal best in the 1km TT at the London Paralympics despite suffering a fractured elbow in a training crash just last month.
The Santry man clocked a time of 1:13:890 in the 1km C1-3 this afternoon to finish 16th of the 28-man field.
He will be in action again tomorrow in the C3 Individual Pursuit where he faces GB rider Darren Kenny who just missed out on a medal today, finishing fourth.
Smyth’s ride today is made all the more remarkable when one considers he came off his bike out training in Majorca in the second week of July and faced an uphill battle to even get to London.
He was on a gentle spin during a training camp rest day in Majorca when his front wheel became jammed in a grate at the side of the road, resulting in a fall and fractured elbow.
He immediately underwent surgery and while the initial diagnosis was positive he was forced to wear a cast on his arm for weeks, seriously disrupting his training build-up for the Games.
However, he was declared fit to travel earlier this month and on the basis of his time today he did not let his misfortune disrupt his mental or physical preparations in recent weeks.
