First look at new Slieve Bloom cycling trails not to everyone's liking

Slieve Bloom MTB trail: This new section has been unveiled but some cyclists are not happy with it, saying it's more like a walking trail than one for MTB riding

Slieve Bloom MTB trail is taking shape and Coillte has published a photo offering a first look at one of the new sections of trails.

The unveiling of this latest section follows on from another section being opened in January.

However, many cyclists are not too impressed with the new offering, which is clearly not to their liking.

They have chipped into a long exchange on Coillte's social media channels saying this stretch looks more like a walking trail than an MTB trail.

Some wondered when street lighting was being installed, saying the trail resembled a footpath. Others bemoaned the fact only 4km had been opened.

However, this new section accounts for only about 4km of the total 100km planned. And this stretch, featured in the photo above, is a beginner section not intended for more experienced off road riders.

“The first phase of the Slieve Bloom MTB trail is
progressing, with Fairymount Farm Adventures - of Bike Park Ireland fame - working
to deliver the first phase of this national MTB trail centre,” Coillte said.

“Currently 4km is open to the public which is accessed
from the Kinnitty trailhead.

“As sections are completed in the coming weeks and
months, these will open to the public and we will keep you informed here and on
social media channels when they are ready to ride.

“Riders are asked not to try to access current working
zones and to please observe all posted notices to remain off incomplete trail
sections.

“Coillte and the local authorities of Laois and Offaly
are pleased to confirm that funding for the remaining phases of the Slieve
Bloom MTB has been secured in partnership with Failte Ireland from the Rural
Regeneration Development Fund.

“This will see 100kms of trails in the Slieve Blooms when
fully completed.”

The latest stretch unveiled is part of opening phase, running at 35km. Around half will be in Co Loais; starting from a trailhead in Baunreagh valley. The other half is in Co Offaly, starting from Kinnitty village.

Already planning permission has been granted for what will be a
national-sized MTB centre with trails for over 100kms in the two
counties.

The two main phases will be joined by a section running along the road at Wolftrap Mountain.

Later in the project a trailhead visitor centre will be built. It
will include bike hire and bike wash, toilets, showers and a coffee shop
at Baunreagh, Co Laois.

In Offaly it is expected that local businesses will effectively come
together in Kinnitty village and create facilities for visitors who will
come into the area to ride the trails.
