Julian Alaphilippe suffered a dislocated shoulder in his crash on stage 11 at La Vuelta today, according to his QuickStep AlphaVinyl team. While no fractures were detected in medical examinations at hospital, we will not undergo further tests in Belgium to check that diagnois.
His team has said he now faces a period on the sidelines - just as he was getting back into form from his crash in April - and that no time frame had been set for his return to racing.
While his crash on stage 11 is a major blow for him, especially coming so soon before he was due to defend his world title in Australia next month, it is also a major blow for Remco Evenepoel, who had lost his strongest ally in the team as he leads La Vuelta.
"Following his crash in stage 11 of La Vuelta, the World Champion was taken to the hospital, where he was examined by doctors," QuickStep-AlphaVinyl said in a statement. "Those examinations have revealed that Julian Alaphilippe has dislocated his right shoulder, while X-rays have shown there is no fracture.
Doctors have reduced the shoulder as a result. Julian will travel to Belgium on Thursday, where he will undergo an extra scan at the hospital in Herentals, in order to rule out any further damage. At this point, no timescale has been set for his recovery."
