Shorts: Greg Henderson pushing Sam Bennett, Irish cycling on TV & more

When this dude strolled out his front garden to watch the Tour de France pass his house, little did he know he'd end up at the centre of a major international incident.

Okay, maybe not a huge global event; but he got a few smart comments on Twitter!

And one came from Lance Armstrong, who like the chap with the girth, never won the Tour de France.

The shot was Tweeted by anti doping campaigner Antoine Vayer, with Armstrong responding with a one-word reply: “Floyd?”

As much as we hate to admit it, it was a pretty witty response as the guy with the tummy does indeed look a bit like Floyd Landis, who blew the whistle on Armstrong after himself being stripped of victory at the 2006 Tour for doping.

Shay Elliott TV programme, in full

The Shay Elliott Memorial in May produced some brilliant racing, with Marc Potts (Neon Velo) winning from Craig McAuley (Caldwell Cycles) in a two-up sprint.

The new format, with circuits before the climbing test, was a winner.

And there to capture all the action was VeloMoto; comprised of the personnel from the Black Umbrella TV and photography company.

Their extended highlights programme of the race has already been broadcast on TG4. But if you click on this Facebook post you can view the full show, all 34 minutes of it.

It's a really classy production befitting the Bray Wheelers-promoted classic race and is well worth a look.

We like this from the Kiwi Tour contingent

The photo above features Kiwi rider Greg Henderson of Lotto Soudal trying to get going again after the infamous huge crash on stage 3 of last year's Tour, when a whole pile of riders hit a pole at the side of the road at high speed.

It took out yellow jersey Fabian Cancellara and forced the race to be neutralised for a period because all the ambulances had to tend to the injured.

Henderson limped home that day second last of the field and was forced out of the race after stage 6 due to his crash injuries.

So on the Tour's stage 2 on Sunday when he saw the victims of the stage 1 crash in bits and  coming out the back of the peloton, Henderson knew how they felt.

Ireland's Sam Bennett (Bora-Argon 18) came down in that bunch sprint spill after Dane Michael Morkov (Katusha) clipped the crowd control barriers and hit the deck, bringing Bennett and a number of others with him.

So rather than let the Irish fastman and Morkov slip past him and out the back on Sunday, Henderson put his hand out and gave them both a push; of minimal help but it's the thought that counts!

And here's the screen grabs to prove it!

Henderson giving Bennett a helping hand.

Henderson gives Morkov a shove too; great to see this.

Speaking of sound out Kiwis...

When Sam Bennett was winning stages in the An Post Rás for An Post-Sean Kelly, Shane Archbold was there too; leading him out and also winning stages for himself.

And now that both are at Bora-Argon 18, Archbold was by Bennett's side and helping him across the finish line after the Tour de France crash on Saturday.

He's given a very dry video interview to CyclingTips.com about the impact of that smash, including having to wipe Bennett's arse for him and put on his make up; though not at the same time we hope!
