Banbridge Cycling Club was set to host the final round of the Cycling Ireland National Road Series today but has been forced to cancel because of the storm damage on the course. The winds and rain overnight have left trees downed on the course, parts of which were also flooded.

And with three races due to make up the Alan Towell Memorial on Dromore set to roll out just after 12 noon, the club had no option but to cancel early this morning after in carried out a course inspection.

"It is with huge regret we confirm the cancellation of today's Alan Towell Memorial Road Race," it said in a brief statement, accompanied by photos of flooding and one of the large trees across the course. "We had hoped that with local manpower we could manage the debris from last night's storm, but the sheer volume of debris and localised flooding has left us no alternatives."

Cycling Ireland also issued a short statement confirming the race, round 7 of the National Road Series, had been cancelled. It was not immediately clear if it would be rescheduled before the end of the season.
