On 25th June 1963 - exactly 60 years ago today - as part of ITN's 'Roving Report' series of documentaries, broadcaster John Whale visited Roubaix velodrome in north eastern France to witness the end of the third stage of the 50th Tour de France.
He wanted to examine the appeal of cycling to Continental Europeans. Cycling is "a big thing" in France explains Whale, and the Tour "the Cup Final, the Boat Race and the Grand National all rolled into one."
But on that day it was Ireland's Shay Elliott, who won the stage alone and took the yellow jersey; two historic firsts for Ireland. It was a long way from his roots in the sport at home, when he joined Dublin Wheelers CC in 1952. He also took stages on La Vuelta and the Giro during his career.
