The first in a series of training camps aimed at attracting female riders to the sport is due to be held in Bray, Co Wicklow, this weekend.
The event on Saturday, January 11th, is being run by Cycling Ireland’s women’s commission with local club Bray Wheelers.
Further one-day events are planned for the weeks ahead including in Castlebar, Co Mayo, on Saturday, February 8th, and Nenagh, Co Tipperary, on Saturday March 8th.
All of the training camps are being organised by the women’s commission with local clubs with the aim of attracting more girls and women into cycling.
They also aim to provide useful information on winter training for those with experience as well as the newcomers.
However, the camps are not restricted to those new to the sport and everyone who attends will perform tasks aimed at improving skill, confidence and ability.
Those interested in taking part in Saturday’s event in Co Wicklow can sign up by logging on to the womenscycling.ie Facebook page.
The event is based at Bray Wheelers clubhouse, Schools Race, Bray.
It begins at 10am with three separate training spins; for beginner, intermediate and advanced level riders.
At 1pm lunch will be served and will offer those present, particularly newcomers, the opportunity to meet each other.
From 2pm there will be a series of talks on training, nutrition and the 2014 women’s racing calendar.
There is a charge of €10 per person and all female riders are welcome.
Bray Wheelers have warned anyone attending that the entrance to the club house car park has a height restriction barrier. If anybody is bringing bikes on a roof rack they are reminded to remove the bike if needed, as it may not fit under the barrier.
If you’re in two minds, then give it a go. By engaging with people already involved in the sport, especially clubs, you’ll make progress much more quickly and you’ll enjoy cycling much more.
