Sepp Kuss, the top US climber in the peloton at present, has extended his tenure with Jumbo Visma by three years, the team announced on Friday.

Because Kuss (26) had climbed so well in recent years,
including at Grand Tours, he was marked out as a rider who may leave Jumbo
Visma in favour of a leadership role elsewhere.

However, he has decided to stay with the Dutch WorldTour
outfit for three more years after his current contract expires at the end of
2021.

Sports director, Merijn Zeeman, said the team was very pleased to secure the services of Kuss for three more years after he had taken wins at the Tour of Utah, La Vuelta and the Dauphiné.

“Sepp is one of the best climbers in the peloton. He has
grown into a rider who takes his own chances, but he is also super important in
supporting the leaders,” Zeeman said.

“He is increasingly becoming a leader himself and we will
guide him in discovering his limits in the upcoming years.”

Kuss said he felt very comfortable in the team for the
past three years and was delighted to sign a contract extension for another
three years.

“The special thing about the team is that everybody
understands me as an athlete and, more importantly, as a person. That way we
get the most out of each other,” he said.

“I always get opportunities and that helps me stay
motivated. We are always striving for something big at this team and that’s
really exciting and really special. So I hope to continue that and keep making
some good memories.”
