
A cyclist and driver have both been killed in the same crash in Co Limerick, which came less than 12 hours after a boy (10) sustained fatal injuries in a crash while cycling in Co Carlow.
The cyclist killed in Limerick died in the early hours of
Friday morning, just after midnight, when he was involved in a crash with a car
driven by man on Hyde Road in the city.
Both the cyclist and the driver were killed and a teenage
passenger in the car was also injured.
Gardai said the scene of the crash remained sealed off on
Friday morning and they were appealing for witnesses to come forward.
“Gardaí are investigating a fatal road traffic collision
involving a car and a bicycle that occurred at approximately 12:15am on Friday,
June 26th, on the Hyde Road, Limerick,” a Garda statement said.
“The male driver of the car and a male cyclist were both
pronounced dead at the scene. Ages of both are unconfirmed at this time.
“A front seat passenger in the car, a male youth in his
teens, was also injured and was taken by ambulance to University Hospital,
Limerick, with non-life threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported.
“Forensic Collision Investigators will be examining the
scene this morning and the road remains closed. Local diversions are in place.
“Gardaí at Roxboro Road are appealing for any witnesses
to this collision to come forward. Gardaí are also appealing for any road users
who may have camera footage - including dash-cam - who were travelling in the
area at the time to make this footage available to Gardaí.”
