Second cyclist fatality after crash with driver as injured boy (8) dies

Gardaí are now investigating a fatal crash in Co Cork after a young boy injured while cycling at the weekend has died

A young boy who was seriously injured in a crash with a driver at the weekend, while he was cycling, has sadly died in hospital. The child, who was fatally injured in Co Cork, died last evening, on the same day as a man out cycling in Co Clare was killed, also in a crash with a driver.

Garda Headquarters, Phoenix Park, Dublin, issued a statement on Thursday confirming the child injured in Cork on Saturday had died at Temple St Hospital, Dublin, where medical staff were battling to save his life.

"Gardaí are continuing to investigate a serious road traffic collision involving a car and a bicycle that occurred on the Cork Road into Carrigaline at the Ballinrea roundabout at approximately 9:20am on Saturday 12th August," the Garda said.

"The male child cyclist who was seriously injured during the course of this collision passed away in hospital on the evening of Wednesday 16th August 2023. Gardaí are continuing to appeal for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

"Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the Cork Road area near Carrigaline between 9am and 9:30am on Saturday 12th August 2023 are asked to make this footage available to gardaí."

The young boy, aged 8 years, was cycling near a pedestrian crossing, and was with other family members, when he was hit by a driver in a car.
