The Police Service of Northern Ireland has begun a criminal investigation into a hit and run on Sunday morning that left a cyclist badly injured.
The incident occurred a week after Irish cyclist and married father of five Aidan Fitzpatrick sustained fatal injuries in a crash out cycling.
Aidan was a member of the Lanterne Rouge Cycling Club based in Loughinisland, Co Down.
The latest crash occurred in Bangor, also in Co Down, and the cyclist involved has been taken to hospital.
Just after 11am Bangor PSNI issued a statement confirming
the cyclist had been hospitalised and appealing for information.
“A short time ago a cyclist was
knocked down and fairly seriously injured at the Donaghadee Road roundabout in Bangor,”
it said.
“From initial accounts we have
been led to believe a blue car has been involved but did not stop at the scene.
“Whilst we have identified several
witnesses at the scene we would appeal to anyone else who saw the collision to
get in touch via 101. The reference number is
cc2019102700593.”
It later added: “From further inquires we believe a dark blue/black Corsa to be
involved. We shall keep working on it to identify the car and driver involved.”
