Sean Nolan has been patched up at hospital in Denmark after crashing during the World Cyclocross Championships and racing on with broken bones.
Nolan suffered a dislocated shoulder and two broken fingers in a crash during the junior race.
While he did not realise he was as badly injured and his shoulder popped back in, he was unable to grip the handlebars properly.
X-rays in hospital would later show he had a broken finger and broken thumb; both on his right hand.
To make matters worse, his problematic shoulder was on his left, making for a near impossible task in trying to continue.

Still he battled on for two laps; some of the photos emerging from the race capturing his grimaces due to the pain.
It was a disappointing outing for Nolan, who crashed when another rider beside him fell off and slid into him.
Nolan was riding over the jumps at the time and fell awkwardly when caught by surprise by the other rider. He continued one-handed for as long as he was allowed.
But in the end he was pulled out of the race by officials who step in at major championships and stop riders off the pace commencing another lap.
The Navan Road Club man secured his place on the team after a very solid season was capped by silver in the national championships last month.
Adam Mcgarr took the title in Cork and he was the other Irish rider in the junior men’s race at the Worlds today.
He too suffered a blow when he came down with an ear infection. However, he took to the start line and he finished the event.
Mcgarr was 61st, some 5:10 off the winning time of Ben Tulett; the British rider seeing off three Belgians who finished 2nd through 4th to retain the title he claimed last year.
