Sean McKenna and Conor Dunne in Bergen Worlds breakaway

Irish cyclists Conor Dunne and Sean McKenna have been away in a breakaway at the World Championships in Bergen.

The elite road race was still underway, with five laps remaining, at the time of writing.

Dunne in particular has driven the escape along very strongly. However, McKenna has been well up to the task too, working strongly to keep the gap on the peloton.

While a number of the escapees have already been dropped, the Irish riders still look comfortable.

They had over 2:30 in hand at the time of writing, though the gap had been more than double that at one stage.

The escape was clear before the racing reached the circuits in Bergen.

In the breakaway with them were: Willem Jakobus Smit (South Africa), Alexey Vermeulen (USA), Kim Magnusson (Sweden), Andrey Amador (Costa Rica), Elchin Asadov (Azerbaijan), Eugert Zhupa (Albania) and Salaheddine Mraouni (Morocco).

Back in the bunch for Ireland are Nicolas Roche, Ryan Mullen and Dan Martin. Unfortunately Damien Shaw had to pull out of the race with injury.
