Sean Kelly reveals what he rates as his hardest day ever on a bike

Sean Kelly has looked back on what he believes was his toughest day ever on a bike; in the Tour de France, of course.

No matter how good you are on the bike, we’ve all had bad days. Some of us have had many so it’s reassuring to know that even the greats like Sean Kelly are the same.

In the clip below, Kelly outlines what he rates as his hardest day ever on a bike; it’s well worth a look.

“During my career there were a lot of hellish and very bad days,” joked the now long retired Kelly pool side at the recent An Post-Chainreaction camp in Calpe in southern Spain.

“But the one I remember very well, very clearly, was in the Alps in the 1992 Tour de France when we went on the stage to Sestriere.

“I can’t remember where we started but it was a very mountainous stage. In the beginning it was quite aggressive and then there was a breakaway and I was in that breakaway on the climbs.

“And I remember and I was getting dropped very early and then trying to get back in again.”

Kelly added that even by the halfway point in that stage he was questioning why he was continuing in cycling and didn’t think he could make it to the finish.
