Unfortunately he came off the worse for wear as he suffered a broken collarbone and also fractured several ribs.
News of Kelly’s crash had spread within the cycling
community in recent weeks and today he took to social media confirming he was
very much on the mend.
“Out for a walk today,” he said. “I’ll
be doing more walking than biking for the next few weeks as I had a crash on
the mountain bike.
“Broke a collarbone and fractured a
few ribs. A little sore but getting better every day. Wishing you all a very
Happy Christmas and a safe and successful 2021.”
The top former pro rider turned Eurosport commentator told stickybottle in recent months he was mountain biking and doing some jogging to keep fit during the lock-down, and you can read about his regime here.
And while his training has been interrupted of late, he is at least back on his feet and getting out and about after what sounds like a nasty incident.
We’ll have a chat with Kelly shortly about his crash and
catch up with his recovery. And we’ll get his thoughts about Irish cycling and
the pro scene in year ahead.
In the meantime, we wish him the best of luck and a speedy recovery.
