These first few days of the Giro d’Italia can be fraught with danger. Everyone is nervous at the start of the first Grand Tour of the year.
But turns out the riders weren’t the only ones really minding themselves on the opening stage yesterday.

He had a busy day working for Eurosport in what were warm conditions. But disaster struck in the evening, as he told viewers early today.
And when it did, Kelly kept warm in a very unusual way.
“It was very cold actually,” he said of getting back to his hotel room in Sardinia after a day out commentating.
“When you come back from being in the warm conditions all day and you go into a colder room, you feel that immediately.
“It was really cold in the room and no air-con of course. I had to put the hairdryer going and leave it run for a half an hour, and leave the bathroom door open, to heat up the room.
“The room was really, really cold. And I was concerned about getting a chill. On the first part of the Giro, that’s not what you want.”
His methods probably would please the fire safety lobby.
But his words are interesting in that they carry an important message; don’t let yourself cool down too fast after a race. Your body doesn’t like it.
Sean Kelly’s Grand Tour record
Sean Kelly was the king of the classics and of course a great man for the Grand Tours.
He only rode the Giro once, towards the end of his career in 1992 when he did not finish.
He won the Vuelta overall, back in 1988. He owned the Tour de France green jersey for many years.
Sean Kelly was 4th overall in the Tour in 1985, just behind Stephen Roche in 3rd.
He finished in the top 10 in the Tour four times, a fact sometimes forgotten.
