Conal Scully said he was “feeling great” after winning the men’s junior gold medal at the National TT Championships in Co Tipperary last night, saying it was his biggest goal of the season to be crowned champion against the clock.

The 18-year-old from Carlow Road Cycling Club is a quality tester and has already represented Ireland in the TT at the Europeans and the World Championships, both last season.

And while he was delighted with his victory last night, he was already looking forward to the junior road race tomorrow and the remainder of his season goals at home and abroad. However, the main focus was on savouring his national title win over the 32.13km course.

“It was a very fast course, I struggled a little bit on the climb on the way back but once I got to the turn on the roundabout I kinda knew I had the legs from there and I got going again. So, yes, it was a good course.”

Asked about the junior championship road race to come Scully said he was “feeling good” and hoping for the best.

“I’ve go some good races in. I had a back crash in April but I’m coming back from that now. I’ve had some good results recently in road races so I’m looking forward to seeing what I can do.”

Scully added while he wanted to perform in the road race tomorrow, his main aim from these championships was taking the gold medal in the TT.

“That (the TT) was definitely my main aim, but it would be nice to get the double in the road race,” he said, adding he also had several other objectives for the season ahead.

“I’d love to do well in the Junior Tour and then I’m out in Belgium with Isorex Cycling for the rest of the summer and racing some UCI races.”
