The RTE TV cameras may have been down in Carrick-on-Suir today interviewing Sam Bennett's parents and his brother about his incredible Tour de France but the best footage to emerge from home was surely the clip, above, of Pat Cashin.
The 89-year-old couldn't travel to Paris to watch his grandson - dubbed my The Green Machine by the Irish media - but he was dug into Eurosport's coverage.
In this clip the emotion and delight is clear to see as Bennett not only wrapped up victory in the points classification, at a canter in the end, but also won the final stage into Paris today.
With his mask on to protect himself from any chance of catching Covid-19, Pat was on his feet willing home his grandson in Paris, the nerves and then delight at the victory clear to see and hear in this brilliant clip from Tipp FM.
Pat also did an interview with the radio station and will be on air tomorrow morning.
President Michael D Higgins also got in on the act, Tweeting out his congratulations to Bennett (29), as he had done when the Carrick-on-Suir cyclist won stage 10 on the Tour the week before last.
“My congratulations to Sam Bennett on his win on the Champs Elysees today," President Higgins said today.
"Winning two stages and the green jersey in one of the hardest Tours of recent years is an enormous achievement, and one that will be celebrated by all those who love cycling and Irish sport.”
