Sam Bennett suffers injury, now replaced by Mark Cavendish for Belgium Tour

Sam Bennett has suffered a knee injury while training. However, though he will not race again before the Tour de France, his team is not getting carried away by the extent of the injury

Sam Bennett has suffered a knee injury while training and has been forced to withdraw from Baloise Belgium Tour, which he was due to start tomorrow.

Deceuninck-QuickStep said the Irishman was being replaced
by Mark Cavendish for the week-long race.

While Bennett’s absence from the race is not a crisis, it
means he will have no more racing before the Tour de France, which is due to
commence on June 26th. Bennett last raced, at Volta ao Algarve em Bicicleta, on
May 9th.

“Following a small incident in training last weekend, Sam
Bennett has incurred a problem with his right knee,” Deceuninck-QuickStep said,
confirming Bennett’s withdrawal from Belgium Tour.

“Sam will be replaced on Deceuninck-Quick-Step’s roster
for the five-day race by Mark Cavendish.”

While Bennett is leaving the team at the end of this
season, it has already confirmed he will ride the Tour de France, adding lead-out
support would also be selected for him.

Bennett (30) enjoyed a fantastic Tour last year when he
won two stages of the race and also claimed the green jersey after a
competitive battle with Peter Sagan (Bora-hansgrohe) right through the three-week
event.
