Sam Bennett had to dig deep and beat the best to win last year, but he did it. And he's back at the same race today in Germany with a very strong Bora-hansgrohe team.
Sam Bennett in action at Sparkassen Münsterland Giro
Having taken a break late last summer and come back to action around now Sam Bennett had a fantastic last few weeks of 2017.
And today he goes back to the race where that resurgence began; Sparkassen Münsterland Giro (1.HC).
Sam Bennett won the near 200km race last year with a brilliant kick in the bunch finish.
Riding high from that victory, he then took on the Tour of Turkey and won four of the six stages.
And he surely would have made that five out of six but for a spill on the final stage.
Still, a four-victory trip to Turkey and holding the leader’s jersey for most of the race was a brilliant end of the season for Bennett.
Today he rides Sparkassen Münsterland Giro again with Bora-hansgrohe and will look to get back on track with a win.
Bennett had a breakthrough Giro d’Italia back in May when he won three stages, including the final leg into Rome.
Two weeks after the end of the Giro he went to German as favourite in the Rund um Köln (1.1). And he duly lived up to that favourites tag with another sprint win.
His season has been quieter since then. But he will be hoping today’s race can kick start his campaign just as it did for his late season 12 months ago.
Sam Bennett rides in German today as part of a very strong line-up. Also in the team is Pascal Ackermann along with Christoph Pfingsten and Michael Schwarzmann. They are joined by Adreas Schillinger, Rudi Selig and Erik Baska.
Last year Sam Bennett beat most of the other fastest men in the world to win Sparkassen Münsterland Giro .
He got the verdict in an exciting blanket finish between himself Phil Bauhaus (Sunweb), Andre Greipel (Lotto Soudal), and Marcel Kittel (Quick-Step Floors).
Another one of the really fast men, Dylan Groenewegen (LottoNL-Jumbo), was 5th just behind the top four.
