Sam Bennett has taken a great result at the U23 European Road Race Championships in Holland today, Sunday, claiming 7th placeafter being right in the mix in the bunch gallop.

The An Post-Sean Kelly rider was part of a seven-man Ireland team in the championship race in Goes this afternoon.

Bennett was part of a depleted peloton sprinting for third place after two riders broke clear and fought it out for gold and silver, with the Irishman fifth in the bunch sprint just seconds later.

The race was littered with crashes, just as the men’s junior race had been yesterday. The circuit included a lot of street furniture and technical sections.

Indeed, Bennett was forced to change bikes on the second last lap and was helped regain the flying bunch by his Ireland and An Post-Sean Kelly team mate Sean Downey – who was himself 11th in the U23 TT at the championships a few days ago.

There are no official results from today’s race yet, though stickybottle understands Bennett’s group finished 11 seconds after Jan Tratnik of Slovenia got the better of Andzs Flaksis of Lithuania to take the title.

Aaron Buggle, Sean Downey and Conor Dunne also finished in the bunch, though all lost a little bit of time as the group fragmented on the run-in. Buggle was 28 seconds down, Downey 32 seconds down and Dunne 37 seconds adrift. Philip Lavery, Felix English and Jack Wilson did not finish.
