Ireland's Sam Bennett was on the road in the yellow jersey at Paris-Nice early on Monday having secured the race lead by winning the opening stage yesterday.
"It was a great feeling putting the jersey on this morning," the Irishman said before the start of the stage today in Oinville-sur-Montcient.
The 188km stage 2 is a flat one that can really suit Bennett, who is in with a real chance of another victory today as the riders race into Amilly.
Race director Francois Lemarchand said with chances of echelons during today’s race, he believed Bennett’s Deceuninck-QuickStep or Bora-hansgrohe could do a lot of damage if they really take it on.
“The pressure goes up, the elastic tape stretches and
whether they expect it or not, not all riders manage to find the right
position,” he said.
“In cycling the level is getting tighter and it’s a real
strategy to create echelons aimed at the weaknesses of some rivals. We see more
and more echelons in the Tour de France.”
