Sam Bennett crashes in Tour de France bunch sprint finish

Sam Bennett was a faller in the sprint finish of the Tour de France opening stage as Mark Cavendish won and took the first yellow jersey of his career.

Sam Bennett of Bora Argon-18 was among the fallers in the sprint finish at the end of the opening stage of the Tour de France.

About a half dozen riders came down well inside the final kilometre just as the final kick for home was getting underway.

The crash obviously took the Irishman out of the hunt for the stage win or a high placing but, more significantly, it likely left him with road rash and bruising injuries that could hamper him through the first stages of the event.

Bennett got back on his bike and finished the stage with the help of his teams; rolling over the finish line just over 2:20 behind the stage winner so hopefully that's positive.
