Irish pro cyclist Sam Bennett is looking for his bike after it went missing on an Aer Lingus flight.

The Monaco-based sprinter was flying from Nice in the south of France to Ireland on Thursday night.

But when he landed there was no sign of his bicycle. He waited around for a period before leaving Dublin Airport for home.

There was no facility to report missing luggage at the airport as the flight had been delayed on Thursday night. It didn’t land until about 2am Friday morning.

Two days later Bennett has still not been reunited with his mount.

Aer Lingus have been communicating with him and have told him to contact Nice as his bike was still there.

However, inquiries in Nice yielded nothing; staff there not aware of any bike having been left behind.

At the time of writing, the search was ongoing. This afternooon Aer Lingus gave Bennett the first hopeful update about the bike.

The airline said it was spotted in Dublin Airport on Friday. And it has now sent a staff member to search for it.

It is the second time in four months one of Sam Bennett’s bike has gone missing with Aer Lingus.

In June when he was returning to Ireland for the National Road Championships his bike disappeared. It showed up soon after but the frame was broken.

News of the second lost bike incident for Bennett comes just weeks after compatriot Philip Lavery lost a bike. He was also travelling with Aer Lingus at the time.

Lavery’s bike went missing on June 24th last in the US. It was not put onto a connecting flight at Newark as he was travelling from Portland, Oregon, to Dublin.

The bike has not turned up since it went missing, over 2½ months ago.

While the bike is valued at €8,000, under the Montreal Convention the airline’s liability for the missing bike is €1,357.43.

Aer Lingus said that sum would only be paid out when he produced a receipt.
