Sam Bennett and his team management looked unhappy as the TV camera zoned right in on their team talk during Gent Wevelgem today. While TV coverage is a part of life on major pro races, none of the teams want the broadcasters getting so close they can hear what's being said between DS and rider.
Bennett was chatting away to the DS in the car when he glanced over his shoulder and noticed the camera was right on him. However, while he appeared to take it in his stride, those in the car seemed more annoyed and quickly waved the camera away.
In the end, it wasn't Bennett's day, not his team's, and the best-placed Bora-hansgrohe rider was Jonas Koch in 22nd. He was the sole rider for the German team left in the remains of the peloton which finished eight seconds down on the winning breakaway.
Bennet himself had a difficult day, finishing in 106th and last man. However, the fact he finished will hopefully aid his efforts to build his form as he comes back from an injury-hit season last year.
Bora-hansgrohe
sports director, Jean-Pierre Heynderickx, said the team was unlucky today and
he believed they had continued to build towards better races to come.
“Today we had
to deal with several mechanical problems that didn’t only cost a lot of energy
but we also missed the decisive moments of the race and had no chance to come
back,” he said.
“In the end
only Jonas Koch was left but wasn’t able to play a role in the final sprint
anymore. In general I’m happy with the development of the boys at the moment
they really improved their style of racing and the positioning. From now on:
Full focus on the Tour of Flanders.”
