The severity of this dirt road climb set to be tackled by the Giro d'Italia riders was enough for some people, who threw nails all over it to try and sabotage the races and riders.
The Giro d’Italia riders were today due to take the very testing Alpe di Poti towards the end of stage 8.
Come as it does with just 20km to go on the 186km trek from Foligno to Arezzo, it should be very decisive.
But if those who tried to sabotage the race’s passage of the mountain had their way, it would have been decisive for non sporting reasons, and ruined some riders’ chances on the stage and overall.

Fans riding the climb yesterday noticed nails had been strewn all over the dirt track surface in what appears to be an effort to ruin the race.
But the club riders jumped off their bikes and began gathering up the nails as some team cars arrived in the area checking out the climb and gave them a hand.
While the episode really is a disgrace, it also brought out the best of the cycling community, with the fans in these shots making sure they cleared the way for the riders; respect!

Just goes to show; the sabotage attempt revealed the extent some idiots will go to, but it also brought out the best in the guys who cleaned the place up and took the photos to expose it.

It seemed extra sinister that the nails were strewn on a stretch of dirt road where they would be hardest to spot.

Fans gather up the nails with some of those working on the race watching and (we hope!) given them a hand.
