Ryan Mullen will be the first of the Irish riders into action at the UCI World Road Championships in Innsbruck.
He will be wearing the colours of trade team Trek Segafredo in the team time trial event on Sunday, though that won’t dampen Irish interest in him.
The team TTs are the curtain-raiser of Worlds week. The pro men’s teams and the women’s pro squads fight it out for those two world titles.
And once those races are done, the national teams take over with a week of junior, U23 and elite male and female road races and time trials.
Ryan Mullen is part of a strong team in action for Trek-Segafredo on Sunday.
As well as Irish champion and former Worlds and Euros TT medal winner Mullen; Toms Skujiņš and Matthias Brändle line out for Trek-Segafredo.
Also in the selection is Fabio Felline along with Michael Gogl and Julien Bernard.
The test is a very long one, at 62.8km, on undulating roads and with a climb near the finish.
Teams like BMC Racing, Team Sky, QuickStep, LottoNL-Jumbo and the defending champions Team Sunweb, among others, will all fancy their chances of a medal.
The discipline is also being scrapped after these Worlds meaning teams will have added incentive to take the title this time around.
Mullen will be a busy man over the next week at the World Championships, riding the TTT as well as the individual test and the road race.
Ryan Mullen already take a bronze in the elite individual TT at the Euros and was 5th at the Worlds two years ago.
And while there is a climb in the individual test, it will be interesting to see how he rides in that race for Ireland given his previous performances.
We’ll have a full preview of the Worlds coming up.
