Irish champion Ryan Mullen has enjoyed a very solid classics so far with Trek-Segafredo. A good ride yesterday will not be followed by the Tour of Flanders.
Ryan Mullen classics campaign to extend into Tour of Flanders
Ryan Mullen is set for the Tour of Flanders on Sunday having ridden strongly in Dwars door Vlaanderen (1.UWT).
The 23-year-old finished in 42nd, in a large group 6:47 down on winner Yves Lampaert (QuickStep).
Mullen has been settling into the Trek-Segafredo classics line-up very of late. He was the only Irishman in Milan-Sanremo on St Patrick's Day.
He finished that race in 117th after 294km; showing well at the front of the peloton before the final climbs.
He rode Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne last month; abandoning and placing 42nd respectively.
After Milan-Sanremo Ryan Mullen also rode E3 Harelbeke, finishing in 73rd. His selection for the 266.5km Tour of Flanders on Sunday comes as a vote of confidence in the young Irishman by his team.
Conor Dunne and Matt Brammeier were also riding Dwars door Vlaanderen, for Aqua Blue Sport. They were not among the finishers.
The racing split to pieces in very wet conditions, with a third of the 180-rider field abandoning.
