Caroline Ryan will face competition from Spain, Belgium, Venezuela and Brazil in Dublin this weekend.
Newly crowned national road race champion Ryan Mullen, former world scratch race champion Martyn Irvine and former world championship bronze medalist Caroline Ryan will spearhead the Irish challenge at the UCI Track Cycling International Grand Prix to be held on the outdoor track at Sundrive Road this weekend.
The trio, who are currently at a training camp with the Irish squad in Majorca ahead of the European Track Championships and Commonwealth Games, will fly home to take on a host of international and domestic riders in the two-day event.
Among those facing Irvine and Mullen in the men's events will be Germany’s national omnium and scratch race champion Maximillian Beyer and teammate Lucas Liss, Dutch duo Daan Van Noorden and Yondi Schmidt, Austrians Stefan Matzner and Georg Reinprecht and Brazilian Fernando Sikoro junior.
Caroline Ryan will also have her hands full with Spanish star Catalin Raya Ramos, Belgian Sarah Inghelbrecht, Gabriela Gomez of Brazil and Venezuela’s Mariesthela Vilera all lining up in the women’s events.
As a UCI event, there will be crucial Olympic qualification points up for grabs for the riders. The meeting will also give the Irish stars the chance to ride an international race on home soil.
“I’m really excited about the International GP this year,” said Ryan.
“It was great to get the opportunity last year for the first time to race and win an international track race on home ground and I can’t wait to get back out and race in front of a home crowd again.”
Backed by Dublin City Council, spectators are encouraged to come along and enjoy the weekend’s activities with racing beginning at 10am on both Saturday and Sunday and expected to be over at around 5pm.
“Dublin City Council are delighted to support this exciting free event for all the family whilst encouraging cycling through our Sports & Recreation department,” said Lord Mayor Christy Burke.
“I’ve no doubt the Grand Prix in our park will attract and encourage all levels of cycling enthusiasts and will be a fun and memorable event for all who attend”.
