The reigning Irish elite TT title holder and multiple
road race and TT champion Ryan Mullen has renewed with Trek-Segafredo.
It means the Irish cyclist will stay on at the team for
another two years; a move that secures his future in the top flight of the
sport.
“I love it in this team, and I think I really fit in
well,” Mullen said today announcing news of his new two-year deal.
“They give me every opportunity for the TTs, and with the
Classics team we have a really great group. It would
have been a shame to leave these guys behind.
“I want to continue to grow in
this environment and to keep working on my future goals and ambitions.
“(Than includes) being successful in TT’s and
one-day races, and riding Jasper (Stuyven) and
Mads (Pedersen) deep into the finals of the cobbled Classics.”
He believed the team, which has
signed Vincenzo Nibali among a host of new riders, continued to offer him a
perfect place to grow as an athlete.
Mullen has endured a slightly frustrating time of late as
an injury kept him out of the European TT Championships.
He has taken a bronze in the elite test at the
Continental championships in the past and the course this year in Holland would
have suited him.
Earlier in the season he had just missed out on a medal
at the European Games; placing 4th and just one second off the bronze.
However, that recent setback with injury aside, he is now
an established WorldTour pro who is looking to develop even further against the
watch and in the classics.
He has just turned 25-years-old and is in his seventh
year riding for UCI teams, meaning his new contract will bring him close to a
decade in the pro game.
Mullen was a top junior who jumped straight into the UCI
Continental ranks as a first-year U23, riding for IG Sigma Sport in Britain for
the 2013 season.
He then joined An Post-Chainreaction, also a Continental
team, for 2014 and 2015.
Towards the end of his second year with the Irish team he
had a stagiaire with WorldTour team Cannondale-Garmin.
He joined that top flight team for the next two seasons
before signing for Trek-Segafredo on a two-year contract, for 2018 and 2019.
