Irish champion Ryan Mullen looks set for big success in pro TTs. But he can also become a classics rider. And that process begins in earnest with Trek-Segafredo this weekend in Belgium.
Ryan Mullen classics stint with Trek-Segafredo
While a TT specialist, Ryan Mullen has spoken several times of Trek-Segafredo holding opportunities for him in the classics too.
Though just 23-years-old Mullen already has several classics and semi classics under his belt.
He’s ridden Paris-Roubaix twice, and finished it both times; taking a solid 50th last year.
Also in 2017 he rode the Tour of Flanders, Gent-Wevelgem, E3 Harelbeke, Dwars Door Vlaanderen, Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne and Omloop Het Nieuwsblad.
Today, Saturday, he begins a new chapter; becoming part of Trek-Segafredo’s classics line-up. First up is the 196km Omloop Het Nieuwsblad Elite (1.UWT).
He is part of a strong line-up that includes Jasper Stuyven, Fabio Felline and Mads Pedersen. Also in the team are Giacomo Nizzolo, Boy Van Poppel and Gregory Rast.
And on Sunday Ryan Mullen is down to ride Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne (1.HC); also in Belgium and 200km. However, that line-up is provisional.
Sam Bennett (Bora-hansgrohe) is also riding on Sunday. And having taken five WorldTour wins last year and one victory already in 2018, he will hope to be in the hunt for victory.
While Irish fans’ eyes will be on Bennett as the rider more likely to get a result on Sunday, it is a big weekend for Ryan Mullen.
He’s already taken a TT win with Trek-Segafredo, at the Vuelta a San Juan last month. He has clearly stated his new team offers both TT and classics opportunities.
The second part of those aspirations gets underway this weekend over the cobbles in Belgium. As a result, showing his new team what he can do from the off in these races is crucial.
