Ryan Mullen and a group of his Trek-Segafredo team mates have been withdrawn from racing in Belgium this week as a precautionary measure due to Covid-19.
The team was due to ride Scheldeprijs on Wednesday, with former Irish road and TT champion Mullen scheduled to ride, but management has decided to withdraw the team from the one-day event.
It comes a week after the riders were withdrawn from Gent-Wevelgem after two positive tests within the team.
Mullen and his team mates were back in action yesterday at the Tour of Flanders, where Milan-Sanremo winner Jasper Stuyven was 4th, but now their plans have unfortunately been interrupted again.
“Due to the positive Coronavirus cases detected last week we have decided to withdraw our men’s team from racing Scheldeprijs as a precautionary measure,” Trek-Segafredo said in a statement.
“The team will isolate at home for a week for extra safety, before returning to competition at Brabantse Pijl.”
Some of the team's riders had already been in isolation, pending testing, when they came into contact with staff members who tested positive, causing the withdrawal fromGent Wevelgem last week.
And now Trek-Segafredo has decided to take a precautionary measure to ensure no major spread of the virus occurs within the team. To date there have been no confirmed cases of Covid19 among the team's riders.
It as been a very disappointing couple of weeks for the team as the Covid19 problems interrupted its momentum just as the classics men scored a major victory at Milan-Sanremo.
