Ryan McCarthy killed cycling in Rathfarnham
The cyclist killed last Friday while riding in Dublin has been named as Ryan McCarthy.
His death was the 13th time a cyclist had been killed on the roads of the Republic this year.
And his was the third cycling fatality in less than a week on the island of Ireland.
Pat Beakey (70) was killed in Co Meath while cycling last Sunday week. And another man in his 20s was hit by a van in Derry last Thursday.
While he was critically injured 24 hours before Ryan McCarthy, he was pronounced dead 48 hours later in a Belfast hospital.
Ryan was cycling in Rathfarnham at about 1.30pm last Friday when he died. He was in collision with a road sweeper truck. He was pronounced dead at the scene, at White Church Road.
Ryan had recently been cycling with Orwell Wheelers in south Dublin. The club lost rider Tonya McEvoy in February.
The 34-year-old child care worker was in collision with a vehicle on a training ride in Co Kildare.
Ryan was from a competitive cycling family. His sister Leah McCarthy is a mountain bike rider.
And Ryan’s uncle Peter Buggle is well known in off road racing circles. And his grandfater, Paddy Buggle, competed in track racing in the 1930s.
Funeral details were released by Ryan’s family earlier today, Tuesday. The Rathfarnham man’s funeral mass will take place on Thursday morning in the south Dublin suburb.
His death notice reads: "Ryan, beloved and adored son to Stephanie and Declan, loving brother to Leah, Amy, Emma, Scott and Aaron.
“He will be sadly missed by his mother, father, sisters, brothers, grandmother, uncles, aunties, cousins, all his extended family, friends and neighbours.”
House private tomorrow, Wednesday
The funeral details and other arrangements were also set out in the same notice. He will be reposing at his home on Rathfarnham tomorrow, which is strictly private.
Removal takes place on Thursday morning to the Church of Our Lady of Good Counsel, Whitechurch, Rathfarnham, arriving for 10am Mass.
Ryan’s funeral takes places afterwards to Kilmashogue Cemetery.
