Protest to block drivers from O'Connell St cycle lane

A protest to block drivers from the O'Connell St cycle lane in Dublin is set to take place later today, Tuesday.

I Bike Dublin will be gathering at 5pm to line the outside of the bike lane and keep it free for cycling in.

The organisation is essentially an action-based group which seeks to protect cycle lanes for cyclists by blocking drivers from infringing on them.

They have formed a human barrier along cycle lanes all over Dublin in recent weeks.

One of the locations they selected was Andrew’s Lane in Dublin 2. The cycle lane there is routinely used as a loading bay.

And when I Bike Dublin formed a human barrier there some van drivers voiced their displeasure.

The group is not only looking to keep cycle lanes free of vehicles. It is also hoping its protest actions will highlight the abuse of cycle lanes by some drivers.

“I Bike Dublin will be holding another lane protection in Dublin this coming Tuesday evening,” it said in a statement.

“This time we've decided to protect the cycle lanes north of the Liffey. We'll be meeting outside Ulster Bank on O'Connell Street.

“The cycle lanes here were once protected by traffic wands/bollards. But they were removed and never replaced. I Bike Dublin will be protecting the cycle lanes here.

“Come along and show your support. As always, this is an all ages event and everyone is welcome.”

The concept of forming a human barrier to block drivers from cycle lanes first began in North America. The I Bike Dublin group has taken the concept to Ireland in recent months.

And a number of other organisations that have been campaigning for cycling infrastructure have joined them. Those supporting groups include Dublin Cycling Campaign.
