Ronan Dennis has been spared prison despite a term of imprisonment being imposed on him relating to the death of his wife Melissa Hoskins

Former world time trial champion, Rohan Dennis, has been spared prison over a road incident that led to the death of his wife, Melissa Hoskins, after the term of imprisonment he was sentenced to was suspended in full.

The charge, and outcome of the case, means he is not criminally responsible for his wife's death.

Dennis (34) appeared at the South Australia District Court on Wednesday, where he was sentenced to one year, four months and 28 days. However, the sentence was suspended on the condition he enter into a two-year good behaviour bond.

He had pleaded guilty to a charge of committing an aggravated act likely to cause harm. As part his sentencing, his driver's licence was also suspended for a period of five years.

Ms Hoskins, the former track world champion and Olympian, was laid to rest in Fremantle Cemetery in Perth in mid January 2023, almost three weeks after she was killed in the vehicle-related incident outside her home in Medindie, Adelaide, on December 30th.

Dennis and Ms Hoskins had argued over home renovations and Dennis left the property - which they shared with their children - to drive off. Ms Hoskins held on to the vehicle and as Dennis drove on the street, she was killed.

Judge Ian Press told Dennis at the sentencing hearing that referring to the fatal incident as tragic "really does not do justice to the grief, the anguish and the turmoil those events have brought into the lives of those who knew and loved your wife".

Judge Press added Dennis was trying to "de-escalate the argument" by leaving the house and driving off, but that did not excuse what happened next.

"It was your obligation to stop the vehicle when driving that vehicle became dangerous to her physical wellbeing," he said. "That you did not stop because you wanted to leave, is a very poor reason for not doing so."

Dennis was initially charged with dangerous driving causing death and driving without due care. He pleaded not guilty. However, when the charges were downgraded to a single charge of committing an aggravated act likely to cause harm he entered a guilty plea.

Judge Press made clear in court Dennis was not criminally responsible for causing Ms Hoskins' death, adding he accepted Dennis was remourseful.

"I accept you have a sense of responsibility for all that occurred. I accept you have anguished over what could have been different if you had acted in some other way," the judge said.

Ms Hoskins had represented Australia at the Olympics in London and Rio, in 2012 and 2016 respectively.

The 32-year-old was also a very accomplished road rider, winning two silvers and a bronze in the TTT at the World Road Championships between 2012 and 2014. On the road she also won two stages and the overall at Tour of Chongming Island (2.1) in 2012.

Ms Hoskins competed for Oirca-AIS for four years up to her retirement in 2015. The team was a UCI Continental squad that was part of the team now known as Team Jayco AlUla.

Dennis was arrested and questioned after the fatal incident in late 2023 but was released on bail after being charged pending his first court appearance. He retired from pro cycling at the end of 2023, finishing his career with a two-year stint at Jumbo-Visma.
