Having won the national road race title solo today in Co Kildare following his TT victory on Thursday night, Nicolas Roche spoke to Shane Stokes for stickybottle after the event.

He reflected on what the two titles meant to him now that he is an older athlete at a different stage of his career.

Roche talks about his “perfect” few days in which he took the road race and TT crowns and said he had done it thanks to the fact he kept his head down in case he was going to the Tour de France.

Those events include the Tour of Poland, San Sebastian and the Vuelta.

“Obviously I was disappointed when I was told I wasn’t riding the Tour,” he said.

But he quickly began thinking of other races and decided to simply switch his focus for the rest of the season.

“The Vuelta is my favourite race, San Sebastian is my second favourite race and obviously there’s the Olympics.”

A long period at altitude would be his focus before the Games and he was hopeful of getting to ride for himself at the Vuelta, team orders permitting.

“I definitely hope so, it’s a race I do know how to race; I’m usually always fit and ready for that race. I just hope there’s no other different tactics by them.”

Roche also talks about his time at Team Sky and ponder what decisions he may make for next year, with his two-year deal with his current employers set to expire at the end of the current season.
