Having won UCI races in the past and shown some good form in recent months, Robert Jon McCarthy is looking to get into the thick of the action at the Tour de Yorkshire.
Robert Jon McCarthy to ride Tour de Yorkshire for JLT-Condor
Former Australian junior champion turned Irish rider, Robert Jon McCarthy, has been selected to ride the Tour de Yorkshire.
McCarthy is part of the JLT Condor team in the four-stage race.
The 24-year-old is in his second season with his current employers; a Continental team based in the UK.
He also has plenty of international racing under his belt already this season, which should stand him in good stead over the next four days.
The Tour de Yorkshire gets underway tomorrow, Thursday, when the race rolls out of the town of Beverley. It features many of the WorldTour’s biggest teams.
“The preparation has been a bit up and down,” McCarthy told stickybottle on the eve of the race.
“I was forced to abandon Tour du Loir et Cher E Provost two weeks ago due to illness.
“But I’ve managed myself pretty well since then and feel I'm coming into Yorkshire well prepared.
“I'm looking forward to being part of such a great race. And I’ll be trying to mix it with the big boys, especially in any potential sprints.”
Is it nearly @letouryorkshire time?

McCarthy has spent an extended period in France of late, also taking in the Tour of Normandie.
However, it was the follow-up event that he was forced to abandon on the third stage.
He also rode the New Zealand Cycle Classic (2.2) five-stage event back in January.
That was followed by the Istrian Spring Trophy (2.2) three-day race in Croatia. He claimed 2nd in the prologue there.
And he has also contested a number of one-day races in Slovenia and Croatia already this year.
McCarthy is originally from the Fermoy area of Co Cork but emigrated with his family to Australia as a child.
He continued his racing there and progressed to be national junior champion. McCarthy also represented Australia up to World Championships level.
However, he declared for the country of his birth two years ago. In recent years he has had stints racing in Europe for An Post-Chainreaction and SEG Racing.
He took a break from the sport in 2016 but returned, to the UK scene, and also switched his nationality back to Irish.
He won the opening stage, and took the yellow jersey, in the 2014 An Post Rás.
Several other Irish riders are also on the start list for Yorkshire; more on that later.
