Winner of the combined A3 and junior race at the Mick Lally Memorial in Summerhill, Aaron Doherty, has revealed his three sporting heroes that have helped him; Conor McGregor, Fabian Cancellara and his own brother Con.

The fifth year Rice College, Westport, student was riding his first race as a junior but blitzed the opposition on a miserable day.

He’s not short of confidence or ability and we reckon he could be one of the stars on the junior scene this year.

He started cycling at the age of 10 as his family were steeped in the sport and they helped organise the International Youth Tour.

Triathlon was his first sport but because swimming became his “enemy” he fell in love with the bike and hasn’t looked over his shoulder since.

“I kept up running until this winter but as I head into the cycling season the bike always takes over," he said.

“Road racing will always be number one because of the adrenaline rush and just the thrill of racing.”

His older brother might be one of the country’s foremost triathletes but Aaron is going about forging a different career.

“Con is a big influence as I probably wouldn't be doing any of this if it wasn't for him," he said.

“Conor McGregor is my sporting hero and in terms of a hero on the bike I'd look up to people like Fabian Cancellara.

“But Con’s a big influence in training these days when he’s back, even though it always turns into a race home…which he inevitably wins!”
