It was more sandwiches than samba at the home of Bryan Keane today and the crowds turned up in their dozens to support the big man in Rio.
They called it the ‘Rio Street Party’ on Gardiner’s Hill on Cork’s northside today as the crowds flocked to watch one of their own compete in the men’s triathlon race at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Bryan Keane, 35, realised a lifetime ambition this afternoon when he took to the start-line in one of the most gruelling sports of all – and he didn’t disappoint by battling to a very fine 40th place.
And while he was hammering it with the best in the world under a blistering Brazilian sun, the Keane’s of Dillon’s Cross and many, many others were giving him their wholehearted support back in Cork.
Indeed, it was more sandwiches than samba and cakes replaced caipirinhas but the carnival atmosphere was very much alive and well in Cork.
Friends, family, followers and neighbours all turned up - even Leevale AC teammate and Olympian marathon runner Lizzie Lee was there after just touching down from her flight home.
Have a look at her going bananas in the videos below! Brilliant!
