Ring of Kerry Sportive shuts up shop nine weeks before popular event due to take place

The Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle has been a victim of its own success forcing action that will disappoint many.

The Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle has been forced to close its registration system for the event because so many riders wanted to take part.

With nine weeks to go before the cycle takes place, a staggering 9,500 have signed up in record time and the organisers have said to take on any more may make the event unsafe and would not be responsible.

The organisers said while fundraising last year reached a record €1.2 million and many more wanted to sign up this year, it felt it had no option but to halt entries now at 9,500 though accepted there had been “an understandable level” of disappointment.

“The Ring of Kerry Cycle organising committee had to make the decision to close registration as there is a limit on the number of participants who can cycle the route safely,” it said in a statement.

“The committee understand that some people will be disappointed but such is the success and popularity of the cycle it was always going to fill very quickly.”

It added the safety of the cyclists on the route was the event’s priority.

“If there was no limit on the number of cyclists it would not be an enjoyable and safe experience... The committee appreciates the fact that there are a lot of disappointed people who failed to secure a place in this year’s event and (we) are at the moment exploring all avenues in an attempt to make further registrations available.”

If any registrations were returned they would be reallocated in a fair manner.

This process will be announced on the event’s website and Facebook page. However, it warned it would not be able to accommodate everyone.

“We hope that anyone who has not registered will appreciate the reasons for us to close the registration process early and we would encourage all cyclists who are registered to go out and raise as much as they can for their chosen charity.

“There are approximately nine weeks to maximise the money raised and we are encouraging everyone to push to beat the record level of money raised last year.

“It is important for everyone to understand that the cycle is a safe fundraising event for nine worthy local charities.”

The committee will be updating its Facebook page, twitter and website regularly leading up to the event with information on the Ring of Kerry Cycle and related events.
