The Irish cyclocross scene, including the national
champs, may have fallen victim to the Covid-19 pandemic but elsewhere in Europe
it’s been business as usual.

However, quite a few competitors in the Polish championships
at the weekend probably wished they had given it a miss judging by the
conditions.

The mud was deep in places; so deep in fact that riders in these images and in the video below can be seen wading through what can only be described as a swamp of cold mud, up to their waist in some cases.

The championships took place in Włoszakowice, where heavy rain the night before yesterday’s racing turned parts of the course into what must have felt like very cold pea soup.

In one particular section of the course as the riders
rounded a corner they ran into the nightmare scenario with that section more
suited to bog snorkeling than cyclocross racing.

Some riders managed to get through it with minimal ordeal
while others unfortunately stepped into the deepest sections of mud and were
waist-deep in an instant.

While onlookers gathered at that section of the course to
see riders brought to a standstill by the extreme conditions, the riders didn’t
seem to be as keen.
