Richard Carapaz of Ineos Grenadiers has been disqualified from Liège-Bastogne-Liège for going into the now banned super-tuck position while on the attack solo just inside the final 20km of today's race

Richard Carapaz has been disqualified from Liège-Bastogne-Liège for going into the super-tuck position while he was leading the race solo after attacking with about 20km remaining.

Carapaz was part of a crack line-up for Ineos Grenadiers today and while he helped to animate the closing stages with team mates Tao Geoghegan Hart and Adam Yates, the team had nobody in the five-man move that went clear on the final climb.

And as soon as the event was over it emerged Carapaz had been disqualified for going into the super-tuck with 18km remaining as he was on the attack.

That super-tuck was banned by the UCI and riders will be disqualified if they go into it while descending. Carapaz has been disqualified despite keeping his backside in touch with the saddle.

The race was won by Tadej Pogačar (UAE-Team Emirates) from Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-QuickStep) and David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ).
