Remco Evenepoel was forced to stop by the roadside, for a very slow wheel change, on the opening stage of Benelux Tour in Belgium today and was not happy about it.
The young Deceuninck-QuickStep rider made no effort to hide his annoyance during the wheel change, below. And he also remonstrated with Gianni Vermeersch after the finish.
Evenepoel appeared to blame the Alpecin Fenix rider for riding into him in the crosswinds, damaging his front wheel and forcing him to stop as the race was splitting to pieces.
“I'm just in the group and you come diagonally through”, Evenepoel shouted at Vermeersch after the finish. “Don't run away but admit your mistake. Are you going to laugh at me in my face now? Oh boy.”
The stage was won by Vermeersch's team mate Tim Merlier. And as Evenepoel's wheel change took so long, he slipped from the first group on the road to the second group, finishing the stage in a large group 57 seconds down.
