The race leader of the An Post Rás, Lukas Postlberger, has had his bike stolen overnight.
The incident occurred at the City North Hotel off the M1 where the team were staying last night but Postlberger wasn’t told of the news or aware of it this morning.
This was because the team didn’t want him being concentrated on other matters aside from winning the race today.
Luckily for the 23 year-old he wasn’t going to be using that bike for today’s final stage as he crashed it on yesterday’s penultimate stage.
However, the bike, a KTM, was highly valued and the team are keen to get it back.
As well as the bike, there were a number of items stolen, such as tool kits, a spare frame, an expensive turbo trainer and other associated equipment.
The team estimate the loss to be "in its thousands".
A spokesperson for the team told stickybottle they’ve alerted the Gardaí and have issued an appeal for anyone with any information to come forward.
The team only noticed they’d been burgled when they went to open the van this morning.
The thief, or thieves, broke into the van through the back doors and made off with the equipment.
Though the bike is damaged, it’s not beyond repair and Postlberger was always going to be using a spare bike today anyway.
The bike is black, white and orange with the distinctive KTM logo on the down tube.
