Connor McConvey, seen here in the Lincoln GP this year, faces a long lay-off after fracturing his pelvis in Austria
Runner-up in the An Post Rás just last month and one of the men of the race, Connor McConvey has been dealt a heavy blow after crashing in a race in Austria this afternoon, Friday.
After undergoing medical treatment he has been discharged from hospital, where staff diagnosed a fractured pelvis. It means he faces a lay-off of around eight weeks.
The Belfast man, riding for Synergy Baku, came down in one of a number of crashes that marred the opening stage of the Oberösterreichrundfahrt Tour; a 176km trek from Wels to Altheim in the UCI 2.2 ranked race.
The race is a three-day, with two more road stages to come tomorrow and Sunday.
When he came down, McConvey was taken to hospital by ambulance from the crash scene. He now looks like he faces an eight-week lay-off, ruling him out of the National Championships time trial and road race, both of which he was down to ride next Thursday and Sunday in Co Louth. He looks set to miss most of the rest of the season.
He was hopeful of gaining selection for the World Road Race Championships in Florence in September. He was very much in contention to be included in the men’s elite team, which will be built around Dan Martin who will be looking to medal on what is a hilly course.
McConvey has ridden very strongly this year in his first season with the new UCI Continental team Synergy Baku. While a win has eluded him thus far, he was second overall in the Rás, claimed the climbers’ classification on the Tour d’Azerbaijan as well as second on the queen stage and was second on a stage of the Tour of Thailand before finishing 5th overall.
Details of his crash today were not immediately clear at the time of writing, though it appears some steep climbing and very steep descents had caught out some in the bunch, with several spills on the road.
He has been discharged from hospital on crutches, meaning he is still at least partially mobile despite the damage to his pelvis. His mobility should mean he can travel home to Belfast immediately.
