Former stage winner Cathal Moynihan said he’s “excited and nervous” about this year’s Kerry Group Ras Mumhan.

The rowing Olympian will spearhead the Tralee Manor West-iBike team, hoping to be in contention for a stage win or possibly challenge on general classification.

“Preparation has gone well so I’m looking forward to getting stuck in,” he told Kerry Radio this week.

“It’s the second biggest stage race of the year after the An Post Ras, it attracts a huge field from home and abroad and it’s a huge challenge.

“The speeds are getting higher every year and you have to be at an exceptional standard to race in it and compete.”

Moynihan, who wore the yellow jersey two years ago has played down his chances but after winning the Donal Crowley in Blarney last weekend he’s hard to ignore.

“If I can be in the mix for a stage that would be my goal,” he said.

“I’m more of a power rider than a mountain goat so stages one and four and possibly three would suit me best.

“The hillier days aren’t suited to me as much but I’d hope to get into breaks and contest stage finishes.

“There’s an A2 prize guys would be looking at and as a team we’d look to put in a strong performance and aim to be one of the strongest club teams.

“It’s exciting to have all these (top Irish and foreign) riders coming to Kerry to race on roads we know - hopefully that’ll give us the slightest advantage.”
