Taco van der Hoorn (Join-S De Rijke) takes the yellow jersey into stage 3 of the Rás but believes the Australians now pose a biggest threat.
Having watched county riders Eoin Morton (UCD-Fitzcycles.ie) and Bryan McCrystal (Louth ASEA-Wheelworx) go clear by seven minutes at one stage, Dutch rider Taco van der Hoorn (Join-S De Rijke) believed his Rás yellow jersey was gone.
However, when the group he was in pegged the two leaders right back by the finish line of Monday's stage 2 into Charleville, the Dutch stage 1 winner held onto the race lead.
He said he was just about to leave the stage finish area for his team's hotel for the night when he realised at the last moment he was wanted on the podium for the yellow jersey presentation.
Expecting to lose the race lead when the race gets hillier now, he believes the Australian team looks very strong and will come into their own, on the basis of what he has seen from them so far
