Race cancellations now extend into June, crisis not easing yet

Sam Bennett won two stages at the Tour of Slovenia back in 2017. This year's event was due to run from June 10th to 16th but has now been cancelled due to the Covid19 crisis

The number of professional cycling races has continued to grow, with events extending into June now being scrapped.

The Tour of Slovenia, which was due to take place in
June, has now announced it is not going ahead as planned due to the Covid19
measures.

Because the outbreak is so severe in Continental Europe many
countries, including Slovenia, are taking additional precautions such as
closing their borders.

As a result, the Tour of Slovenia has decided to cancel,
though the event was not due to take place until June 10th to 16th.

Ireland’s Sam Bennett won two stages of the Tour of Slovenia back in 2017 and also claimed the points jersey.

Primoz Roglic was a popular winner of the Tour of Slovenia in 2018 when he also won the final two stages

In Ireland racing is postponed until March 29th. That
coincides with measures such as a school closures, though there is a
recognition those measures are likely to be extended.

If they are extended it seems inevitable that Cycling
Ireland would extend its pause on racing, sportives and other events.

In Britain racing has been called off until the end of
April, though Covid19 precautions there have been implemented more slowly but
put in place for longer.

Tour of Slovenia race director Bogdan Fink said his team
had reached the point where it simply had to make a decision.

“Looking from the organisational standpoint we should
already be doing all activities for the organisation of the Slovenian tour,” he
said.

“The fact is that all groundwork had to be cancelled for
an unforeseen length of time and we had to question the new financial reality.

“Considering this, we had to accept the responsible
decision and cancel the Tour of Slovenia for this season.”

The team organising the race added it had to take into
account the health and wellbeing of its staff and others who would be involved
in aiding the race.

The Tour of Slovenia is also among a growing number of
races to announce the cancellation, rather than postponement, of the 2020
edition.
