Gardaí in Co Wicklow have said they have met with a number of cyclists out for rides in the county today, Sunday, and have sent them home early from their spins.
The cyclists in question have broken no laws and therefore committed no offence.
It has emerged over the past 24 hours that new laws to strengthen Garda powers during the Covid19 crisis have not yet been implemented.
The Garda also indicated it would take a practical approach to the new measures in their first few days of operation as people got used to the full scope of the restrictions.
Gardai planned to stop people and explain the new measures and then urge people to comply with them, which has been the case with the cyclists in Wicklow.
It means the cyclists sent home by the Garda from their spins early on Sunday were urged to go home as a safety measure in this time of public health crisis.
“Gardaí in Wicklow conducting Covid19 and anti-crime
checkpoints are meeting with quite a number of cyclists and having to end their
morning spin and send them (home),” the Garda said.
“Please support everyone by obeying the restrictions put
in place to protect us all,” it added.
The message was published on the Wicklow Garda’s Facebook
page along with images of cyclists and the hashtags #GetOffYourBike #WashYourHands
#StayAtHome.
Under the new Covid19 public health measures introduced on Friday night, people are being urged to stay at home unless they are shopping for essentials, performing an urgent medical or family task or are classified as key workers and are moving around as part of their job.
Exercising is permitted, but the Government has said it should be kept brief and should be performed within a 2km radius of home.
